If you’re a web host evaluating a WP Care offering, we encourage you to read our 4 WP Care Models for Web Hosts.
Let’s start with respect. ManageWP essentially invented multi-site WordPress management. Long before “WordPress Care” was a category, ManageWP gave agencies a single dashboard to update, back up, and monitor client sites. GoDaddy’s acquisition of ManageWP in 2016 was the moment the industry learned that WordPress maintenance was becoming infrastructure, not an afterthought. And shoutout to Troy Dean from WP Elevation who put WP Care plans on the map, teaching agencies generate recurring revenues. GoDaddy licenses WP Elevation’s content.
We know this history personally at Seahawk Media (our agency). Before building WP Maintain, our team ran client sites on ManageWP, including the period when GoDaddy moved it into their dashboard under Pro Sites. We eventually moved back to ManageWP’s direct platform because we wanted separation from the hosting panel. That experience taught us something we never forgot: agencies want their command center outside the panel, and hosts need something entirely different from an agency dashboard.
That lesson is where this comparison begins. ManageWP and WP Maintain both keep WordPress sites updated, backed up, and monitored. But they were built for different operators, in different eras, with different owners. ManageWP is an agency-first management dashboard owned by GoDaddy. WP Maintain is a WordPress Care platform purpose-built for web hosts and technical agencies, delivering infrastructure-level care across an entire customer base while also powering host-branded agency programs and flexible integrations.
If you are a hosting company or technical agency deciding which platform belongs in your operations stack, this comparison breaks down where each one fits, and why ownership matters as much as features.
Two Different Operators, Two Different Problems
An agency managing 10 to 50 WordPress sites needs a dashboard where staff log in each morning, review what needs updating, push changes, and generate a report for the client. ManageWP was built for exactly this workflow, and it does it well. The Worker plugin connects each site, the Orion dashboard centralizes the work, and white-label reports document the value delivered.
A web host or large agency managing 50+ WordPress installations has a fundamentally different problem. They cannot ask each customer to install a management plugin and register a cloud account. They cannot have support staff manually review every site. They need infrastructure that runs silently in the background, catches problems before they generate tickets, demonstrates care to customers automatically, and creates a services layer that turns maintenance from a cost center into recurring revenue.
ManageWP solves the first problem. WP Maintain solves the second, while also covering the first through the Agency Partner Program, delivered under the host’s own brand.
The Ownership Question Every Host Should Ask
Here is the strategic reality that feature tables do not capture: ManageWP is owned by GoDaddy. A hosting company owns the maintenance dashboard.
If you are a web host that competes with GoDaddy for customers, and your agency partners run their client portfolios through ManageWP, your agency ecosystem lives inside a competitor’s product suite. The relationships, the workflows, the site inventory across hosts, all of it sits one click away from GoDaddy Pro and GoDaddy hosting offers.
This is not a criticism of ManageWP’s product. It is a structural observation about incentives. GoDaddy did not acquire ManageWP to strengthen other hosts. They acquired it because agency relationships drive hosting decisions, and whoever owns the agency’s command center owns influence over where the next site lands.
WP Maintain sits on the opposite side of that structure. We are not a hosting company, and we never compete with our partners for their customers. WP Maintain exists to help hosts win: the agency platform is delivered white-label under the host’s brand, agencies manage their portfolios inside the host’s ecosystem (including sites hosted elsewhere, which expands their surface area with the host over time), and every revenue stream the platform creates belongs to the host. Through the Agency Partner Program, hosts can run a fully white-labeled agency platform or a lightweight affiliate model with promo codes and free credits that incentivize agencies to migrate more client sites onto the host’s infrastructure.
One platform routes agency relationships toward a competing host. The other routes them toward you.
How Each Platform Deploys
ManageWP follows the classic per-site onboarding model. Install the Worker plugin, connect the site to the dashboard, configure the premium add-ons you want per site. For an agency onboarding clients one at a time, this friction is acceptable because the agency controls the process.
WP Maintain does that and also deploys at the infrastructure level. The connector can be preinstalled during WordPress provisioning, bulk-deployed across existing sites by hosting plan or server segment, and activated without any customer action. Sites are automatically enrolled in monitoring, safe updates, and Proof-of-Care reporting delivered by email or panel embed. No registration step. No customer-facing dashboard to explain.
For a hosting company with hundreds or thousands of existing WordPress installations, the difference between “each site must be connected manually” and “zero-touch enrollment” is the difference between a tool some customers adopt and infrastructure that covers the entire base from day one.

What Stands Out
ManageWP does not offer a staging environment. Updates are pushed to live sites, with backups available as the recovery path if something breaks. Recovery is not prevention. This is why safe updates on an isolated safe staging environment are core WP Maintain features, with visual regression testing and confidence scoring before changes ever reach production. Learn why safe staging is non-negotiable for maintenance platforms.
The Add-On Economics Problem at Host Scale
ManageWP’s pricing model is genuinely clever for its audience. The core dashboard is free for unlimited sites, and premium features like scheduled backups, uptime monitoring, SEO tracking, and white-label reports are activated per site for a dollar or two each, billed at month end based on actual usage. Bundles flatten the cost for agencies past 25 sites, with an all-in-one option covering up to 100 sites for a fixed monthly fee. An agency managing 40 sites picks the add-ons each client needs and wraps the cost into their retainer. At agency scale, this works.
At host scale, the model inverts. A host with 5,000 WordPress installations cannot make per-site, per-feature decisions across a customer base. The administrative overhead alone defeats the purpose, and per-site add-on pricing multiplied across thousands of sites produces costs that were never designed for infrastructure economics.
WP Maintain prices for volume from the start, because hosts think in segments and plans, not individual site checkboxes. The foundational care layer covers every site. Premium tiers layer on top as products the host sells, with billing, plan management, and subscription infrastructure built in.
The Ticket Deflection Gap
For web hosts, the most important metric in WordPress maintenance is support ticket volume. Every plugin conflict, every malware infection, every white screen of death becomes a ticket that costs money and risks churn.
ManageWP operates on a pull model. It is a capable dashboard, but someone has to log in, review, and act. That someone is the agency, which works when an agency is engaged. It does nothing for the host’s broader customer base, where most WordPress sites have no agency watching them at all.
WP Maintain operates on a push model. Updates run automatically with regression testing and rollback protection. Security monitoring runs continuously with an integrated firewall and malware scanner. Expired premium licenses are flagged before they become unpatched vulnerabilities. When human attention is needed, support teams see complete site context before the customer even opens a ticket.
Fewer tickets. Faster resolution. Customers who never experienced the problem in the first place.
Proof-of-Care: Making Maintenance Visible
ManageWP’s client reports are a deliverable: the agency emails a PDF that justifies the monthly retainer. Within the agency-client relationship, that model works.
Hosting customers have a different relationship with maintenance. They do not expect a monthly PDF from their host. They expect the site to just work. But at renewal time, or when a competitor’s offer lands in their inbox, a tangible record of active care changes the conversation from “is my hosting worth the price?” to “my host is actively protecting my business.”
WP Maintain’s Proof-of-Care reports embed directly in the hosting panel, surface through the host’s email infrastructure, or export during support interactions. They are not a deliverable. They are a retention tool.
AI: A Category ManageWP Does Not Play In
From what we understand, ManageWP does not offer AI capabilities in the maintenance workflow.
WP Maintain includes mAIn Chat for querying insights across an entire fleet of sites, Site Chat for diagnostics on a specific site, and Chat-to-Staging for executing tasks autonomously in a safe environment before anything touches production. For hosts, this drives down the cost of site tweaks included in WP Care plans and cuts support triage from minutes of manual investigation to seconds of conversation.
Who Should Use Which

- You want a maintenance partner that helps hosts rather than competing with them
- You need zero-touch deployment across hundreds or thousands of installations
- You want to reduce WordPress-related support tickets through proactive care
- You want a white-label agency platform that keeps agency relationships inside your ecosystem
- You want vendor freedom through open integrations instead of a bundled stack
- You want to create recurring revenue through tiered WP Care products backed by a professional services layer (WP Care Pro, Pro+, and VIP through Seahawk Pro Services)

- Security must be foundational, not a per-site add-on decision
The Bottom Line
ManageWP earned its place in WordPress history. It defined multi-site management, and its acquisition by GoDaddy proved that maintenance had become strategic infrastructure. For agencies comfortable in that ecosystem, it remains a capable, familiar tool.
But that acquisition also settled the question of who ManageWP ultimately serves. It is owned by a hosting company. Every agency relationship it holds, every site inventory it maps, lives inside a business that competes with you for hosting customers.
WP Maintain is built on nearly a decade of delivering WordPress Care for hosting providers, and it takes the opposite position by design: we help hosts, we do not compete with them. A platform that deploys silently across every WordPress installation, prevents problems before they become tickets, makes care visible without customer effort, powers a host-branded agency program, opens every integration decision to the host, and turns maintenance into revenue instead of overhead.
Your maintenance platform should be your ally. That is what WP Maintain was built to be.
